Choosing stillness

Today Devotions #4

So often I hear people quoting this verse, but I have noticed that they only quote the first part. You will see signs and inspirational posters and frames saying “Be still” on beautiful nature scenes. But that is missing the whole point.

There definitely is something to being still. In a culture where it is almost impossible to go thirty minutes without social media or media stimulation, hearing the words “Be Still” are not common. But this evokes images of closing my eyes, taking five deep breaths and then continuing on with my day.

Psalm 46:10 “Be still and know that I am God!

I will be honored by every nation.

I will be honored throughout the world.”

This verse is so much more then pausing for stillness and then continuing on with your day. This is a command to stop what you what you are doing, to put down your devices and distractions and worries and acknowledge the awesome sovereign God.

But it’s even more then that!

“I will be honored by every nation. I will be honored throughout the world.” vs.10

When I read this, I get shivers. This is our God declaring His awesomeness. This is our God telling us that He will be honored. This is not a “maybe” or a “might” be honored, this is a declaration that “I will be honored throughout the world.”

I encourage you to take a moment today, put your phone away or switch the flat screen off, get out your bible (or just use google) and read psalm 46. There are ten verses. Read them and be reminded of who God is, of his power and what He is capable of. We so often put God is a small box and associate Him with religion or church, but He is so much more than that!

The song Way Maker by Leeland says it so well. God is:

Way maker, miracle worker, promise keeper, Light in the darkness, My God that is who you are.
