#6 Read It!

2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.”

I have had people tell me over the years that they are so frustrated with God. They have decided that they have had enough of not getting answers to their prayers, or direction in their lives. They feel unheard and thus undervalued. If I am honest, there have definitely been seasons in my life where I have felt this deep dissatisfaction with God. As humans we are so easily caught up in our own thoughts, desires, feelings and wants that we really can miss out on the big picture. It was in one of these seasons where I was lamenting to my dad who is someone I look to when I need guidance and clarity about God, and he simply asked me, “Have you been reading your Bible?”

Well no, I had not been.

I had been praying for the things I wanted. But I had not been reading my Bible.

I have come to learn you cannot have guidance and direction for your life if you are not earnestly reading you Bible.

“All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives.” 2 Timothy 3:16

And there is more, read the next verse:

“It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” vs 17

“But I am too busy to ready my Bible.”

Are you though?

Really think about it. I have caught myself saying these things, but when I was really truthful, I actually did not want to read my Bible. If I can scroll social media for an hour and not think twice about that wasted time, it clearly is not a time issue but a desire issue.

So I challenge you, read your Bible. Pick a chapter to start in and go from there. I started in the New testament two years ago and I am still not done. I read slow and often reread something that really stood out to me. There is no race or need to accomplish reading your whole Bible on a timeline, just read it.

Are there some really big issues in your life that you need guidance on? Or maybe some nagging issues that you cannot seem to overcome?

James 4:8 “Come close to God and God will come close to you…Purify your hearts for your loyalty is divided between God and the world.”

Father God, give me a heart that wants to learn and grow. God, in a world that is so caught up with schedules and stuff help me to slow down, and breathe in deeply and take time to get to know You. Prepare and equip me to do your work in the world around me.

Amen

Start with 5 minutes a day. Set a small goal. Everyday for 5 minutes. And build from there. You do not have to make it grand, just show up in your faith! God will meet you there.
